Automation Maturity & Improvement

Approach to assess the maturity of automation practices to identify gaps and develop a plan for progressing to the next maturity level to achieve business objectives.

Overview

A scalable approach to enterprise automation requires that different processes are aligned to deliver value consistently and become more efficient over time. One of the most common challenges faced by organizations when growing their automation practice is disparate and inefficient processes that hinder business performance. Evolving enterprise automation requires organizations to measure how well the established procedures work together and what improvements are needed to better support the business goals.

Workato's GEARS Framework Automation Maturity Model represents how an organization's automation practice can evolve over time. The model helps organizations assess where they are in their enterprise automation journey and how mature their current practices are. Furthermore, this understanding allows organizations to determine the steps required for systematically progressing to the desired maturity level and developing capabilities for continuous improvement in enterprise automation.

The Automation Maturity Model maps an organization's current practices to one of the five maturity levels. Each level provides a good measure of the performance of the organizational capabilities, including employee skills, processes, and technology operations. It also tells if the organization is on course to achieve enterprise automation targets set by the Business Technology Strategy.

GEARS Framework: Automation Maturity Model Levels

Level 1 maturity represents the initial maturity level of automation practices. Organizations at Level 1 maturity are likely to build automations reactively and need better alignment with the overarching business and technology strategy.

Level 2 maturity focuses on delivering quick wins from respective projects, but processes and systems still need to be implemented to scale automation for enterprise-wide adoption. The automations at this level encompass business processes that span multiple business functions.

Level 3 is the intermediate maturity level, emphasizing an established foundation for scaling automation practices across the organization. A dedicated Automation HQ team often supports organizations in this phase to define and drive the organization-wide automation vision.

Level 4 practice focuses on fostering an automation culture and organizational change management. The key performance indicators from various automations are tracked and reported to measure the effectiveness of enterprise-wide strategic value creation.

Level 5 maturity is the most advanced maturity level of automation adoption. Automation practices are well-defined and aligned with business objectives. Organizations at this level build automations focusing on gaining the ability to drive business performance through continuous improvements.

Use the Automation Maturity Assessment to determine the organization's maturity level and get a view of your current and recommended target states. The assessment is designed to benchmark the organization's automation practice performance against best practices in each area. It will help you understand how far ahead or behind the curve your automation practices are and which areas should be prioritized most to improve your automation maturity. Additionally, you can use the assessment report to plan your continuous improvement roadmap and secure necessary investments and resources from the leadership.
